Frequently Asked Questions – Flagstaff Surgical Associates

Can I send the doctor’s emails?

You are able to communicate with our office through our patient portal. It is a great way to communicate on non-emergent issues, such as prescription refills, appointment requests, billing questions or medical records requests. You will receive an email inviting you to join the portal, and you will then find new patient paperwork under the Questionnaires tab. If you need login information, please contact us. Please make every effort to participate as you can gain quick access to your care and results.

Where will my surgery be done?

Flagstaff Surgical Associates works with the hospital and two local surgery centers. We will schedule at the facility that best fits your surgery needs and is contracted with your insurance carrier.

Will I be able to eat or drink before my surgery?

It is important to have an empty stomach before surgery to minimize the chance of vomiting during or after surgery to avoid complications. You will generally be instructed not to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery. This is extremely important and your surgery will be canceled if these instructions are not followed.

Why does it take so long to schedule my surgery?

On average, surgery takes 7 to 10 days to schedule. Insurance often requires precertification and/or authorization. There is usually preoperative testing that the patient must have and patient, surgeon and surgery facility schedules need to be coordinated. We know that waiting for your surgery is not easy but we will do our best to get your surgery scheduled as soon as possible.

How do I know if my surgery is healing normally?

It is normal for your incision to appear discolored or slightly swollen. Call our office if you are having excessive pain, increased swelling or drainage or if you just have questions or concerns.

When should I make my postoperative, follow up appointment?

If you are not given a follow-up time when you are discharged after surgery, please call our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible after returning home. Typically, the postoperative appointment should be 7 to 10 days after surgery unless your doctor tells you something different.

How long does it take until I receive my pathology results?

We usually receive pathology results in 3 to 5 working days. If special stains are required or specimens are sent to outside facilities, the results may take up to 2 weeks longer. We will do our best to have the results to you as soon as possible.

How long is recovery after surgery?

Recovery time varies by procedure and the repair method used. Minimally invasive procedures typically allow return to light activity within 1-2 weeks. Open surgical procedures may require 3-4 weeks for light activity and 6-8 weeks before resuming heavy lifting. Your surgeon will provide specific restrictions and timeline based on your specific procedure. Pain management and activity modification are critical for proper healing.

What should I do if I have questions between appointments?

Our staff is happy to answer questions during business hours by calling (928) 773-2222. For non-urgent concerns, you can also use our patient portal to message our office. If you have urgent concerns between appointments, leave a message and our clinical staff will return your call the same business day. For after-hours emergencies, follow the prompts on our phone system or seek care at the nearest emergency room.

Do you offer telemedicine consultations?

Yes, we offer telemedicine consultations for appropriate patients. Telemedicine allows you to consult with our surgeons from your home or office using secure video conference technology. Telemedicine is ideal for follow-up visits, medication adjustments, and initial consultations for certain conditions. Call our office at (928) 773-2222 to determine if telemedicine is appropriate for your situation.

Do you accept my insurance?

We accept most major insurance plans. However, coverage varies by plan and procedure. Our billing department will verify your specific coverage when you schedule your appointment. We are committed to transparency and will discuss any out-of-pocket costs before treatment. We also offer payment plans and financing options for patients without insurance or with high deductibles.

What happens during my first appointment?

During your initial consultation, we will review your medical history, listen carefully to your concerns, perform a physical examination if appropriate, and discuss your symptoms and treatment options. We may order imaging studies or laboratory tests to aid diagnosis. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and participate in treatment planning. Please bring your insurance card and photo ID.

Do you offer second opinions?

Absolutely. We welcome patients seeking second opinions. A second opinion can provide valuable insight into your condition and available treatment options. Please bring your medical records, imaging studies, and any reports from previous evaluations. We will thoroughly review your case and provide our professional assessment. Most insurance plans cover second opinion consultations.
